For the First Time: Wisdom Tooth Extraction Performed on a Human Patient by a Robot
A robot designed to perform wisdom tooth extractions successfully carried out the procedure on a human patient sitting in the treatment chair.
The surgery took place at a local clinic in Tokyo on July 14, 2015.
The patient involved in the procedure, or more accurately the experiment, was a 55-year-old local man.
Alla Dente – The Dental Robot
The robot that performed the medical procedure was named “Alla Dente,” and one of its developers, Ishaki Murakoni, said, “We had a lot of luck and success with Alla Dente.”
He further mentioned that the new robotic surgery program will expand on a larger scale, with the development team planning to replace 30% of Japanese dentists with robots capable of performing such delicate procedures in dental clinics.
The team reported that the surgery went smoothly, and the patient experienced no significant discomfort.
The exact nature of the surgery is not entirely clear.
For example, it’s unclear what type of procedure was performed, whether it was surgical or non-surgical, if the tooth was impacted, and whether pre-and post-operative care was provided by the dentist or the robot itself.
Ishaki Murakoni added, “We knew the software was perfect, we knew Alla Dente had all the capabilities to perform such a delicate task, but to successfully complete a wisdom tooth extraction… I mean, there were moments when I felt sorry for the person in the chair.
It’s good to know our experiment had a happy ending, knowing from previous trials that much more blood could have been shed.”
Meanwhile, protests have emerged from dental associations regarding the spread of such robots in the dental field and the potential impact on dentists. Concerns were also raised about how these robots would handle medical emergencies or complications that could arise during procedures.
There are groups in France, for example, working to ensure that such robots don’t make their way into real dental clinics.
A spokesperson for one such group said, “This is our job, and we take great pride in it. We don’t like the idea that they (the robots) will come and take our place.
People need to understand that even if robots can extract a painful tooth, they won’t be there to tell jokes and comfort patients when the blood flows like a river.”
Revolution: No More Drilling to Fix Teeth
A new and revolutionary product is now available at Bio-Dental, allowing Dr. Ilan Price to prevent the development of tooth decay caused by dental caries.
Icon offers a new approach to treating dental caries without drilling into the tooth enamel and without anesthesia.
Icon works by infiltrating the tooth with resin and blocking the acid that leads to the development of cavities.
Even in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth, such as between the teeth, Icon halts the progression of caries.
All this – without drilling, without pain, and without anesthesia.
In the past, there were two options:
- Using fluoride – accompanied by repeated X-rays to monitor changes. However, there are complex cases where it’s difficult to reach areas in the mouth where cavities develop and apply fluoride.
- Drilling the tooth – This procedure would sometimes involve removing healthy parts of the tooth, anesthesia, and drilling.
Now, Icon, a minimally invasive treatment developed by the international and renowned company DMG, has arrived. Studies have shown that the number of cavities in individuals aged 18-35 can be reduced by about 80%.
At Bio-Dental, we now offer the revolutionary Icon program for cavity prevention. The treatment is suitable for both adults and children.
