1. NO sugary drinks wherever possible. The main drink at home should only be water or milk.
At night some children get thirsty during the night and have adrink by the bed, this can ONLY be water .
Fruit juices have high sugar content and should only be drunk once a week
2. Brushing teeth with the correct Fluoride content for the age. Do not use the same toothpaste for all the kids, because a child over 6 years old needs more fluoride than under 6 . Please read the label to get the correct age .
It should take at least 2 minutes to brush the teeth, so make sure you are doing it for the correct amount of time.
3.It is also important to brush properly twice a day and DO NOT RINSE your mouth even with water after brushing . This will rinse off the protective coating of fluoride that has just been put on . Just a gentle spit out of the excess toothpaste and that is all .
4. Look out for hidden sugars in your kids diet . Things like tomato ketchup , has 20 % sugar in it .
Energy drinks ( should not be used outside of sport ) one 380 ml energy drink can have as much sugar as 6 lollipops .
Read the labels and cut out sugar.
5. Visit the dentist twice a year with your children to check on how they brush their teeth , as well as receive good diet advise. Finally if needed the dentist can take x-rays and check for any cavities and to check the correct teeth are erupting at the correct time.
